The “land of a thousand lakes” 「千湖之地」
Thoughts of Poland might produce images of lakes of ice, not sunny lakeside vacations. Yet for years Europeans have enjoyed spending their holidays in Poland’s Masurian Lake District. Located in the northeastern part of the country, Masuria covers nearly 52,000 square kilometers. Stunning forests fill the region and are home to many rare plants. But the area’s water is the biggest attraction.
Thousands travel to this “land of a thousand lakes” each summer. In spite of its nickname, there are actually more than 2,000 lakes in the region. Most of them are connected by rivers and canals, creating a welcoming world of water. The lakes were formed by melting ice blocks left behind by the area’s last glaciers. Today, water covers 15 percent of the area, and forest covers 30 percent. The combination creates a perfect environment for wild animals, including beavers, eagles, moose, bison and more. It also makes Masuria’s Lake District one of the top vacation spots in Central Europe.
