Most 13-year-olds make themselves happy by climbing virtual mountains in video games. But Jordan Romero of California spends his free time climbing the real thing. If fact, by 13 he had already climbed the highest mountains on six continents. But he wasn’t done yet.
His dream to climb the seven summits
In many ways, Jordan is like any other teenage boy. He enjoys sports, hanging out with friends and even working on math problems. But one thing sets him apart from the others – his desire to climb.
A school painting of the seven continents’ highest summits first inspired him to climb them. Since the painting caught his interest, he’s actively worked to make his dream a reality. At 10, Jordan completed his first major climb, reaching the peak of Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro. He followed that by scaling Europe’s Mt. Elbrus. Next came South America’s Mt. Aconcagua, North America’s Denali and then Oceania’s Carstensz Pyramid. But still ahead was the mountain that few climbers had scaled successfully – Mt. Everest.

Earlier this year Jordan Romero began his two-year North American Tour. His goal for the tour is to climb to the highest point in all 50 states. Then in December, Jordan and his team will attempt the final of the seven continental summits: they will attempt to climb Vinson Massif in Antarctica.
