Teachers Without Borders seeks to address the worldwide shortage of
trained teachers as well. The United Nations estimates that as many as 15 to 30
million teachers are needed worldwide to meet current needs. As a result,
schools often hire untrained teachers. To help correct this problem, TWB makes
teacher training available through regional workshops and conferences. Several
of these conferences have benefited teachers from China, Africa and India.
One of the primary tools that TWB uses to equip teachers is the
Certificate of Teaching Mastery (CTM). This program helps teachers gain
professional skills and even become mentors in their schools and communities.
They can complete the CTM through workshops or online via the Internet. TWB
also uses others ways to train teachers from a distance. For instance, the
Voice of Teachers radio broadcast in Nigeria discusses contemporary issues in
education to help teachers in that region. TWB’s online journal The Voice of
Teachers makes teachers aware of current research in the field of education.
