NORTH CAROLINA’S OUTER BANKS暢遊北卡羅萊納外灘

Discover this wild and wonderful region known for its history, beauty and new beginnings 探索這片天然、美妙的地區,了解其著名的歷史、美景與嶄新的開始

America’s first colonists called it home; Blackbeard the pirate considered it an excellent hiding place; the Wright Brothers declared it perfect for man’s first flight. With its long stretches of windswept beaches marked by history and time, the Outer Banks sometimes looks and feels like a place civilization forgot. Today people travel to this eastern coastal region to experience for themselves the wild beauty found along these famous shores.
Dangerous waters
A 200-mile-long, narrow strip of islands form the Outer Banks, extending from Virginia’s southeastern corner to the midway point of North Carolina’s coast. The islands act as a barrier, separating smaller bodies of water from the rough Atlantic Ocean. These waters off the Outer Banks are so dangerous that they’ve earned the nickname “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Throughout the region’s history, these waters claimed the lives of many as ships encountered hidden sandbars, shallow waters and deadly storms. Divers today can spot more than 2,000 shipwrecks – vessels that went down it the surrounding seas. Yet in spite of the dangers, English explorers in the 1500s decided the Outer Banks would be the perfect location for a brave group of settlers.
