“First in Flight”

When the Wright Brothers visited the Outer Banks, steady winds and wide beaches convinced them this was the place to attempt their aviation experiment. On December 17, 1903, Orville took off from Kill Devil Hill and flew 120 feet in their flying machine. The flight lasted just 12 seconds, but it was a momentous 12 seconds as this was the world’s first powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft.

Visitors today can see the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills and tour the Visitor’s Center with full-scale reproductions of the airplane.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which extends 70 miles from Nags Head to Ocracoke Inlet and covers over 30,000 acres, became America’s first National Seashore in 1937. Today you can drive along this magnificent coastline to see sand, sea and wildlife. The wild mustangs of Corolla, descendants of the Spanish horses left behind on the islands 400 years ago, are a must-see. And no trip is complete without visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, America’s tallest brick lighthouse at 208 feet.
