Inca Gold Llama
This little gold llama statue was made in Peru between 1400 and 1500. Domesticating animals hugely affected human culture by providing food, clothing and transportation. The llama, South America’s beast of burden, enabled the Inca to build the largest empire in the world. They bred the animal to be an army pack animal because it was well adapted to high altitudes and could withstand cold.
Mechanical Galleon
Constructed in 1585, this “toy” ship is a decoration, clock and music box that stands 104 centimeters high. It represents shipbuilding and its importance in Europe from 1450 to 1650.
Tremendous advances in shipbuilding took place during that time, allowing Europeans to explore. This changed their view of the world and their place in it. This ship, a galleon, was especially designed to sail on the ocean and withstand high winds.
Since 1650, many, many more inventions that embody advances in human history have changed people’s lives. The automobile, light bulb, airplane, assembly-line production, computer and Smartphone to name a few. And who knows what will come along in the next decades that will again change human history? We have only to wait and see.
