Britain’s top cheerleading team soars to success and beyond
In 1996, Texas-born Shara Brice made a move that forever changed her life – and the lives of countless others. Brice, along with her British vicar husband, moved to Newham. Known as one of the toughest boroughs in London, Newham was not exactly an ideal place to live in Brice’s mind. But soon after settling in, Brice realized that the area presented her with a unique opportunity to serve others. The young people living in Newham were caught up in violence and gang activity and needed something positive to do.
When her husband decided to hold a soccer tournament for Newham youths, she decided to see if any girls would be interested in cheering for it. Brice hung up a sign, 30 girls showed up, and the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders (AEC) was born.
Now 15 years later, AEC has 130 members ranging in age from 7 to 24 years. Five separate squads compete internationally at cheer competitions, frequently claiming awards and championships. Today, AEC is recognized as England’s best overall cheer team, and their elite senior co-ed squad, Legacy, is ranked 6th in the world.
