“The Lost Colony”
How does an entire village disappear without a trace? No one knows for sure, but that’s exactly what happened to America’s first colony. In 1587 a group of more than 100 Europeans arrived at the Outer Banks and settled on Roanoke Island. Within weeks, food shortages began, so it was decided that Governor John White would return to England for supplies. Unfortunately, he was prevented from leaving England for the next three years. When White finally returned to Roanoke, he found everyone gone.
To this day no one knows the fate of the colonists. But visitors to Roanoke Island can see a reenactment of the colonists’ struggles in America’s longest-running outdoor drama, “The Lost Colony.”
A pirates’ hideaway
Over 100 years later, the Outer Banks, with its out-of –the –way bays and shallow waters, became a favorite hiding place for pirates. One of the area’s most notorious visitors was the famous pirate, Blackbeard. From his secret place off Ocracoke Island, he could spot ships traveling along the coastline. Legend has it that Blackbeard would lure ships to shore, where they would wreck on underwater sandbars and then be looted by waiting pirates.
